The easiest ways to save money when buying video games

No matter where you play video games or which ones you prefer, buying a new game is a very expensive purchase. Most of the newer releases will set you back around fifty dollars or more. carry Guitar Hero III for example with their price tags of ninety dollars for the game and the guitar. There are ways to save money buying games. You just have to know how.

I’ll be the first to admit that I love being one of the first people to own a new game once it comes out, but that doesn’t mean I buy every game I want at full price. Instead of wasting my money, I try to wait a few weeks for a new release in hopes of finding it cheaper. There are several ways to save some extra money when buying video games. Here are some of the most popular ways:

  • You can never go wrong saving a few bucks on video games by buying used ones. At the very least, you’ll save about ten dollars, but you can potentially save twenty to thirty dollars. I know buying a newly released used game is often impossible, but if you’re willing to wait a few weeks, you’ll probably find one. The money you’ll save is worth the wait.
  • The only thing to watch out for when buying used games is the condition of the disc. Ask to see it before you buy it. The last thing you want is to come home and find that your game is scratched and not working properly.
  • One way to find a cheaper game is to wait for the price to drop. Your chances of finding a game at a bargain price increase considerably the longer you wait. You won’t believe the number of deals you’ll find on games that were released over a year ago. Some can be found for half the price.
  • Read flyers at electronics stores for deals. Although most places don’t offer deeply discounted sales on video games, you can find one from time to time. This is most commonly done during the holiday season.
  • You won’t find this too often, but clearance sales sometimes offer the best deals out there. Look for places that are going out of business. They are sure to offer deep discounts on the merchandise they are looking to download before they close their doors forever. Many times, people come to closing sales looking for big-ticket items, so your video game selection is often overlooked and, more importantly, left untouched. That means a lot of great video games may be available.
  • Another way to play is to rent them first. There are plenty of games that can often be beaten in less than a day or two of serious play. Now imagine all the money you’ll save by renting a game and winning it than buying it and winning it just a few days later. With the money you save by using this little hack, you can pay full price for a new version.
  • Ask a friend of yours if they would be willing to sell you an old game that they no longer play. You are bound to get a lot out of them. Why would your friend try to scam you?
