Bugatti EB 218: the car that brought the company back to life

In 1995, Bugatti declared bankruptcy as the market for supercars had slowed. In the late 1990s, Volkswagen bought the rights to use the Bugatti name and brought the company back to life. The Volkswagen group introduced the Bugatti EB 218 at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show. The 218 was built after the 118 model, which was first shown at the Paris Motor Show a year earlier in 1998. Giorgetto Giugiaro, Under contract to Volkswagen, he designed both the 118 and 218 models. The 218 is a classy, stylish car that has distinctive looks and high-performance capabilities.

The 218 is a modern design but is based on the classic models in the Bugatti line. The result of this mix of classic and modern design gives the 218 a very individual look and at the same time a perfect blend of power and elegance in this top-tier car.

The outer frame of the 218 comes from state-of-the-art space technology built in aluminum and the finish is “Blu Notte Perlato”. The 218’s sexy and dynamic look is accentuated by the car’s luxurious interior. The instruments in the cabin are oval in shape and the instrument panel is fully upholstered in fine leather. Adding to the luxurious and elegant look is the use of light walnut and a special silk leather finish. The 218 has a navigation system that is hidden, when not in use, under the clock. Shifting gears in the 218 is a snap as there are buttons on the steering wheel for sequential transmission. The cabin is extremely spacious and seats four comfortably. All seats are finished in leather and for added comfort there are footrests.

The 218 features permanent 4-wheel drive and has an aluminum multi-link suspension that allows the car to have superior traction and handling abilities. Despite the 218’s elegant appearance, it also has a sporty feel thanks to the wide track, long wheelbase and short body overhang. The tires are a great looking and distinctive addition to this mighty car as the 218 features 285/50 up front and 285/18 in the rear. The 218 features a hidden wing at the rear which is up there when the car accelerates to higher speeds as this gives the car stability and downforce.

The 218’s engine is developed by Volkswagen and packs a punch with three rows of 18-cylinder banks that come together in a “W” shape. The engine has a displacement of 6.3 liters, produces 547 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds.
