Planning a picnic in Wellington Park?

Locals say there’s nothing like their city on a good day, and that’s true on the boardwalk. If you’re planning some time outside, maybe a picnic or just a place to blow off some of your kids’ energy, then consider visiting the recently redeveloped Wellington Park, Waitangi.

The first area of the park, which represents about three quarters of the total area, was recently completed and the final two areas are still under development. This is an area steeped in history as it was a place used by the Maori due to their access to water for food supply. It stands to reason that it remains a place where people gather, share food, and socialize.

Being able to relax, sitting on the grass or on a park bench, has to be one of life’s simplest pleasures. It’s not hard to see why it’s a favorite pastime during our long warm months or a clear winter day. Grab a book, frisbee and blanket and pack a picnic or pick up some delicious food at one of the nearby food stalls or cafes and spend the day.

One of the best features of the Wellington park is the ability to entertain a variety of ages. If you have little kids, they’ll enjoy the swings, slides, and playground, and teens will like getting their boards out at the skateboard park. Of course, there’s also plenty of room for kite flying, backyard cricket games, and the chance to kick a football around or hacky sack. A basketball court is the perfect complement to all of this, and a great place to lock down some of your louder teenagers to burn off some energy, while you enjoy a quiet read and relax, or play a few games of petanque.

If you’re a bit of a gardener or just appreciate a beautifully landscaped garden, be sure to stroll near the wetland area that has been planted with natives. This is an environmentally friendly area that will encourage bird visits in the appropriate seasons.

Of course, no day in the sun is complete without a visit to the beach and this seaside spot does not disappoint. While it’s a beach that’s been decked out with extra sand, it’s a great place to bask in the warmth of the sun and test the waters, even if it doesn’t go beyond a few inches of exploration.

Overall, there’s enough going on to keep you and your family happily occupied all day at Wellington Park, by the waterfront.
