How to travel to Kenya on a budget

There are numerous ways to save on your trip to Kenya.

Flights:

To get cheap flights to Kenya, it is necessary to travel in low season. You could save over $200 compared to traveling in peak season. Kenya’s peak tourist season is between January and February and June to September.

Plus, taking direct flights could also save you on airfare. For example, if you are traveling from Great Britain, you can travel with Qatar, Ethiopian or Emirates Airlines. They take much longer since you have at least one layover, but they are usually cheaper. British Airways and Kenya Airways fly direct to Kenya from London Heathrow or Gatwick. Most of the time they are more expensive, but you could still get a good deal if you book early.

Accommodation:

It is quite easy to save on accommodation in Kenya. Instead of booking your stay at a hotel, you can stay at a hostel or choose a home stay. Hostels like the YMCA, YWCA, and Nairobi Youth Hostel offer reasonable rates, up to $10 per night.

Home stays have become the best option for cheap travel to Kenya. Here, you can stay with real Kenyan families and you will experience Kenya from the perspective of a Kenyan. Home stays are usually around $14 a night, including all meals and usually laundry.

For the more adventurous, camping is also a good option. If you have your camping gear, it will only cost you $5 a night. Some campgrounds will rent a mattress and bedding for around $3 a night.

Kenyan food:

Food in Kenya is generally cheap! You can choose to eat at fast food or local restaurants. These will be much cheaper than eating in exotic restaurants or hotels. When leaving on safari, it may be worth visiting the supermarket at the start of your trip and picking up a few things. This can include fresh fruits, juices, bottled water, snacks, chips, and the like.

If you get these three areas right, you’ll likely save over $500 on your trip to Kenya.
