How to choose an awning for the home

In this modern age, it can be very difficult to decide what kind of awning you should buy for your home or business. The options in the market are almost endless and it has become very difficult to make a distinction on what suits your needs and style.

There are three main styles of awnings that companies produce today. The first is the aluminum metal canopy. These awnings are still popular and were originally introduced to the market in the 1950s in the United States. The frames and slats are 100 percent aluminum, so they are maintenance-free. Aluminum awnings come in a variety of colors and the style generally consists of stripes at the top and a skirt at the bottom. These awnings are the least expensive of the three types and also the most popular in states like New York or New Jersey.

The second type of awning is the plexiglass awning or also sometimes called lexan awnings. These are made with a bulletproof polycarbonate sheet and come in clear or tinted. The style is most notable because it allows the sun to shine through and illuminate a porch or patio up to 75% more than an aluminum awning. Typically, a polycarbonate lexan awning is made with an aluminum frame due to its anti-rust qualities. Lexan awnings can be approximately 40% more expensive than aluminum awnings and are typically seen on the front of the house because they are considered stylish.

The last type of awning is a retractable fabric awning. There are two main styles of retractable awnings, one is the American version that has arms that are positioned vertically. The sleeker, European retractable version has arms that sit horizontally and consist of lateral arms. Both types of fabric awnings will extend outward with a remote button or manual crank, depending on your preference. It’s usually adequate to go with an electric remote if your awning extends more than 7 feet, as it takes a fair amount of work to get it started. Retractable awnings are usually placed on the front porch or back deck. Price wise, lexan and retractable awnings are about the same. While aluminum and lexan awnings are used to keep out rain or snow on a porch, fabric awnings are for sun protection only and are not made to prevent inclement weather.

For a 10′ by 10′ porch or deck you can expect to pay $1400 for an aluminum awning, $2000 for a lexan awning and $2200 for a remote control retractable fabric awning. If you live in an area with high winds or snowy conditions, I would not recommend a retractable fabric awning as fabric is not made for this climate.
