Basics of the window cleaning uniform

The uniform of most widow cleaners is very basic, shorts or jeans, a t-shirt, tennis shoes and a hat. Pretty simple, but there’s a bit more to it than that. The uniform is probably the most important aspect of branding your business. The uniform is what people will see, in addition to your equipment and vehicle. The customer is not walking into a store front, you are the store front. Then the uniform will tell them how professional you really are.

If you look like their next door neighbor, they won’t take you as seriously or as a professional, but as a scammer. You need to think about the company colors that you will use to match your logo, uniform, advertising, and ultimately your vehicle. As these things are the visual representations of your business and how professional you are, it doesn’t matter if you are just starting out, you can still be professional.

Let’s talk about the t-shirt, some window cleaning companies have polo shirts with embroidered logos. This is nice, but can be quite expensive, especially since you’ll want at least 15 shirts to start with just for yourself, as your clothes will get ruined. The most popular option is a solid t-shirt with a printed logo. I recommend a dark or dark gray color to hide dirt as you will get dirty and this will lengthen the wear of the shirt as it will stain. You don’t want to go with stained shirts that show, as you are once again presenting an image of professionalism and cleanliness to the customer.

Shorts or pants are also very important. I like the Dickies brand for this as they are real uniform style clothing, they also hold up well over time and tend to have big cargo pockets that I use all the time. I put on his shorts and use the cargo pockets for my towels and other things.

To help keep your shirt dry and clean, it’s best to tuck it in, so make sure you have a good black belt, although you could have the squeegee belt covering where it would go.

The hat is also a nice touch, it is always good to combine the hat with the pants or shorts. For example, my company colors are blue, gray and yellow. So I have a gray t-shirt, with blue shorts and a hat with a yellow logo. The baseball cap is for presentation only. Once I’m at work outside, I pull out my straw hat that covers me past my neck to protect me from the sun. Although it is more difficult to use when moving stairs. If I’m not too hot, I wear the baseball cap inside.

Next is shoes, you could wear boots but they might weigh you down after a while so I prefer tennis shoes. The lighter the better, you also want something comfortable since you are going to be on your feet the whole time. Again, matching shoes are ideal, but go with comfort first. Most people don’t look at your feet anyway. Don’t forget to have matching socks!
