Advantages of the Global Village

The phrase “global village” is perhaps overused, but I think not without reason. Technological advances have really shrunk the world, and it’s not uncommon to find citizens of one country living and working in another, often literally on the other side of the world.

Transportation is faster and easier, and as the years and technology have progressed, the whole concept of “border” has become more and more of a convenience than an obstacle to trade, or for people to meet. move physically around the world pursuing economic or other interests. These days, the notion of a “global citizen” is becoming more and more common, and if the long-term trend continues, then the whole concept of “nation” may become an obsolete construct.

Of course, that day is probably still quite some time away, but even now, it’s easy to see how such a thing could happen. We really are becoming a global village, and while that may unsettle some people (and outright terrify others), overall, my feeling is that this is a good thing.

However, one thing remains true. No matter who you are, where you’re from, or how long you’ve been gone, sooner or later just about everyone finds themselves craving a taste of home. Perhaps he had a favorite blend of tea that he enjoyed when he lived in his home country. Or a favorite brand of snack that your new home just doesn’t have (or even knows exists). Nostalgia can be a powerful force, and when it hits, it’s nice to know that technology can help you satisfy those cravings.

There are a plethora of websites that cater to the needs and wants of specific regions, and these sites are full of country (or region) specific goodies that will give you the taste of home you’re looking for. So if, for example, you’re a British expat living in a remote location and suddenly find yourself craving a steaming cup of Earl Grey, fear not! A source is just a few mouse clicks away and can be delivered right to your door, no matter where in the world you choose to live.
