5 easy steps to prevent trailer swaying

There are different types of trailers; general hauling utility, vehicle hauling cart, camping and enclosed cargo trailers. Sway is the unwanted movement made by trailers. If these back and forth movements are severe, an accident could occur if transferred to the towed vehicle. Proper installation of your trailer and tow vehicle could prevent swaying. Roll is dependent on tire pressure, hitch, coupling, weight, and tongue weight.

You need a friction balancing device and an air pressure gauge.

1. 10 to 12 percent of the trailer’s weight should be on the tongue. The tongue is at the front of the vehicle. When too much weight is placed on the back, it rocks. You can weigh your loaded trailer at a trucking shop. They have scales that you can use to weigh it. The assistant will help you divide the weight of your trai to find out how heavy your tongue is. To get the correct tongue weight, rearrange the load. This means removing some items if they are overloaded and reweighing them.

2. The manufacturer’s manual should tell you how much cargo capacity your vehicle should carry. The manual also indicates the appropriate hitch class for the vehicle. Make sure your tow vehicle is not overloaded. Add the weight of the cargo, the trailer tongue, and the passengers. The weight capacity of the vehicle should not be exceeded.

3. Trailer and tow vehicle tires must have the correct air pressure. The owner’s manual has the correct tire pressure listed for both the vehicle and the trailer. The air pressure gauge should help you check your tire pressure. The tires must be cold during the check. If you have just driven your vehicle, let the tires cool down before checking the pressure.

4. The trailer should not be driven in windy conditions to prevent it from tipping over. Your tow vehicle could also fly. If you predict severe weather, wait until it is calm. You should only tow in cool weather.

5. Install a friction balancing device with the help of your dealer. A test drive can be done to make sure everything is installed correctly. If the oscillation is still there, the adjustment handle should be turned clockwise. Continue until the oscillation disappears and the trailer stabilizes. On each side of the hitch on large trailers, install a sway control device.

Make sure to change your driving speed when towing. The added weight may not allow you to drive as fast. Most vehicles sway at 45 mph or higher. Stay off the roads if your domain begins. Avoid changing lanes frequently or passing tractor trailers unless absolutely necessary. Changing lanes and passing tractor trailers are causes of swaying.
