Prepare your first-aid kit for back to school

It’s time to go back to school. We parents know that this is the real beginning of the year: January is just for practice.

We venture into the mall or discount store armed with our credit cards and school supply lists, gathering markers and dorm sheets and the shoe brand that’s trending this year.

It’s also time to restock the first aid kit.

Whether it’s been an active summer and first aid supplies have run low, or the family’s been a couch potato and school sports are in the spotlight, this is a great time of year to make sure you have everything you need. What you need for those bumps and bruises, small emergencies and everyday “owies”.

Here’s a list of the basics:

  • aspirin or acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) for pain; check with your pediatrician before using aspirin with children
  • bruise treatment (such as BruiseMD) for minor bruises and bruises
  • bandages (such as band-aids) for scrapes and cuts: various sizes are a practical idea, and bright colors can distract children from the scrape or cut
  • calamine lotion for insect bites or rashes
  • sunscreen for daily use: get kids into the habit early
  • witch hazel to clean cuts and abrasions
  • decongestant (such as Sudafed) for colds and allergies
  • aloe vera for burns or sunburn
  • a thermometer: fever may suggest the need for a visit to the doctor

Keeping these things on hand will get you through the busy back-to-school season without the need for emergency trips to the pharmacy. The last thing you need right now is extra stress!
