A blast from the past
It all started with the need for a fast and light reconnaissance vehicle (military observation of a region to locate an enemy or determine strategic characteristics) that could move effectively on any terrain to replace the US Army motorcycle. And the modified Ford Model T vehicles in July. 1940. The Army opened a tender for production in which it invited more than 100 manufacturers and established a list of vehicle specifications.
Initially, only Willys-Overland and American Bantam Car Manufacturing Company responded. However, Ford Motor Company came onto the scene a little later. Thereafter, the three companies competed for the lucrative government contract. In 49 days, the Bantam Company built its field car, while each company produced prototypes for testing in record time.
The three companies were awarded the construction of 70 sample vehicles after the delivery of their prototypes to the army in the summer of 1940. Willys-Overland designed the Willy’s Quad while Ford developed its Model GP (General Purpose), also known like Pygmy.
In November 1940, the Army took possession of these vehicles that exceeded their specifications, but then realized the need to raise the limit for the next round of vehicles.
In March 1941, the Army released another round of contracts. Each of the three companies was to produce 1,500 vehicles. Bantam designed Model 40 BRC vehicles, Ford improved GP Pygmies, while Willys-Overland called their vehicles Quads. After a series of tests, analyzes and evaluations, the US Army had selected the main manufacturer as Willys-Overland.
Name’s origin
There have been many explanations as to where the word “Jeep” originated. Some suggest they informally named it after Eugene the Jeep, a character from the Popeye comic strip because the soldiers were so mesmerized by the new vehicles. However, the best known theory is that the military designation GP (for government or general use purposes) was introduced into the word Jeep, while Willys-Overland president Joe Frazer claims to have coined the term Jeep by dragging the initials GP of your vehicle model. Willys-Overland was also the company that filed for the original trademark in February 1943.
