International Students Apply For Student Accommodation in Cambridge

As one of the world’s most famous university cities, Cambridge attracts thousands of students every year. This high demand for Cambridge student accommodation is why there are so many options available, from en suite rooms and self-contained studio apartments to private bedrooms and shared houses.

There’s much more to Cambridge than just its famous university, however. The historic city boasts a wealth of adventure and fun activities to keep you occupied in your time away from lectures, with impressive art galleries, buzzing live music venues and a vibrant dance and theatre scene.

With so much to see and do, it’s no wonder that the city has gained such an international reputation as a top destination for students. You’ll find plenty of student-friendly cafes, bars and restaurants in the heart of the city and a diverse range of affordable rent for students starting from as low as PS215 per week with Unilodgers.

While the iconic city centre is a must-visit, there are plenty of other areas that offer a quieter, more residential feel. The historic streets of the centre are home to a number of well-respected colleges, including Anglia Ruskin and the University of Cambridge. This makes them ideal locations for Cambridge student accommodation, as you’ll be close to the universities and all of the amenities that they have to offer.

How Can International Students Apply For Student Accommodation in Cambridge?

When looking for student accommodation in Cambridge, you’ll want to consider what’s important to you. For example, if you’re planning on attending classes at The University of Cambridge, you’ll want to ensure that your student housing in Cambridge is within the university’s ‘precincts’. This is an area that covers a three-mile radius around Great St Mary’s Church, and it is where most of the lecturers and university resources are located.

In addition to individual living spaces, student accommodation often provides dedicated areas for collaboration and studying. These spaces are designed to facilitate group work, discussions, and knowledge sharing among students. Equipped with comfortable seating, whiteboards, and technology resources, these collaboration spaces foster a conducive environment for academic engagement. Such environments encourage students to work together, exchange ideas, and deepen their understanding of course material, ultimately enhancing their learning outcomes.

Luckily, the majority of Colleges have their own on-site student accommodations as well as a variety of privately owned flats and houses. Most of these are located on the campus, with some situated in the city centre or surrounding area. As a general rule, if you’re guaranteed accommodation with your College for the first year of your course, you will be guaranteed that same accommodation for all three years of your degree. You will normally be required to sign an annual contract for your College-owned accommodation, which is normally 27 or 39 weeks in length, and you won’t be charged for any vacation periods.

These are typically located within the university campus and offer a range of room options, such as single or shared rooms, communal bathrooms, and shared kitchen facilities. On-campus accommodation provides students with easy access to academic buildings, libraries, and extracurricular activities.

You’ll normally be told where you will be living, how much it will cost (per term, per month or per week), and when you can move in. You’ll also be shown around your accommodation by the Porters and informed of how to access any problems that may arise. You should also be made aware of any restrictions that apply to your residence, such as noise regulations. On arrival, you will normally go to your College’s Porters’ Lodge to collect your room keys. If you have any concerns about your accommodation, you should contact your College International Officer or Student Advice Service for further guidance.
